University investigating law school community member after concerning social media posts

On Jan. 10, Emory University School of Law Dean Richard Freer wrote an email to Emory Law students addressing a community member’s social media posts that have prompted “concern” and “uncertainty” in the law school community. Freer wrote in the email that the law school has been working with both the Emory Police Department and the Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response to investigate the situation.

The University has not publicly disclosed the contents of the individual’s social media posts, nor how the community member is affiliated with Emory Law. Freer wrote that the investigation is ongoing.

According to Freer, the individual who made the posts is no longer allowed on campus and the University has increased police presence on the law school’s campus. Additionally, law school entrances will only be accessible via Emory identification cards.

“All members of our community must carry their EmoryCard to enter the school, and we ask that you not hold open doors or press the button for disabled access unless that need exists,” Freer wrote.

Free added that “independent” of this investigation, the University installed new security cameras over winter break.

While the law school has not cancelled any in-person activities, Freer wrote that faculty may choose to hold classes on Zoom through Jan. 14.

Student Bar Association President Kylie Doyle (26L) wrote in an email to The Emory Wheel that the student government organization is holding a public meeting on Jan. 14 at 12:15 p.m. on Zoom to discuss safety concerns the community member’s social media posts have caused.
