Emory University published its annual Clery Report this month, which gathers fire safety incidents, safety and security violations and other crime statistics from 2022-24. Emory Police Department Chief Burt Buchtinec and Associate Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer Melissa Hall emailed this report to Emory community members on Oct. 1.
Under federal law, all universities participating in federal student financial aid programs must have crime-related statistics records and publish them in an annual report.
Criminal offenses
The Atlanta campus saw a decrease in motor vehicle theft, burglary and aggravated assaults compared to an increase in robbery offenses between 2023 and 2024.
There were 45 reported burglary cases on the Atlanta campus property in 2023, but that number decreased to 29 cases in 2024. There was also a decrease in on-campus property aggravated assault incidents. In 2023, there were eight cases and in 2024, there were three.
Burglary for both the Atlanta on-campus property and on-campus student housing declined from 61 cases in 2023 to 43 the following year.
At Oxford College, there was one reported instance of arson on on-campus property, an increase from zero cases of arson in 2022 and 2023. Burglaries rose from four to seven, and no other criminal offenses were reported for 2024.
Violence Against Women Act offenses
Atlanta on-campus property and housing saw a decrease in domestic violence incidents in 2024 compared to 2023, from 14 to eight, while dating violence offenses rose from 10 to 21 and stalking offenses decreased from 80 to 64.
At Oxford, there were no reported instances of domestic or dating violence in 2024 and 2023, and down from two offenses in 2022. There were five stalking offenses reported in 2024, up from two in the prior year.
Drug and liquor violations
In 2024, there were no arrests for campus violations related to drugs and liquor on the Atlanta campus, a decrease from two arrests for drug law violations in 2023.
Campus violation referrals for drug law violations increased from 24 in 2023 to 33 in 2024. In 2022, there was only one drug violation referral. Liquor law violation referrals decreased slightly, but there were over 230 violation referrals for the third straight year.
There were no reported arrests for on-campus Oxford property and housing related to drug, liquor or weapons law violations. However, there were 49 violation referrals for liquor law violations in 2024, up from 16 in 2023 and 17 in 2022. There were two weapon violation referrals, up from zero in 2023 and 2022. Drug violation referrals decreased from four in 2023 to two in 2024.
Other crimes
The Atlanta Campus had four hate crime incidents related to bias surrounding race, religion and national origin in 2024. Oxford had zero incidents reported.
There was a decrease in arrests for weapons violations, down from six arrests in 2023 to two in 2024 in Atlanta. There were zero arrests at Oxford for either year.
In 2024, there were three fires reported at the Atlanta campus student housing, two were started accidentally, one from cooking and the other from electrical issues, producing $0-$99 and $100-$999 in damages, respectively. The third fire was noted as undetermined in intention. Phone books caught fire on the stovetop and the damage was estimated to be around $100-$999. There were three reported unintentional fires at student housing facilities on the Oxford campus; two occurred at Fleming Hall, and one occurred at Murdy Hall. All were reported as unintentional cooking incidents.
