Crime Report: Neglect of elderly, arrest for other agency, simple battery

The Emory Wheel regularly meets with Emory Police Department (EPD) Records Manager Ed Shoemaker (87G, 90G) and Communications Director of Campus Safety Morieka Johnson (94C, 24L) and uses EPD’s public crime log to inform the Emory University community about recent crime on and around Emory’s campuses.

To report a crime, contact EPD at 404-727-6111 or police@emory.edu.

Neglect of elderly at Parkside at Budd Terrace

The facilities director at Budd Terrace, a senior rehabilitation center, called EPD at 3:40 p.m. on Sept. 9. The director told EPD that the daughter of a patient alleged that the staff at Budd Terrace Nursing and Rehab Center had neglected her mother, who is a resident of the center.

EPD spoke with the daughter at about 5:30 p.m., and she told EPD that the employees at Budd Terrace failed to follow the patient’s care plan ordered by their doctor. One alleged example of neglect, according to the complainant, was the doctor leaving an IV line in place in the patient for over 30 days during the summer. This IV line became infected, which led to sepsis and an extended hospitalization for the patient.

After the patient was discharged from Budd Terrace on Sept. 2, a home health nurse identified an infection and another medical issue about half an hour after the patient returned home. This medical issue required a visit to the emergency room, and the patient had to stay at a hospital for three days.

Arrest for APD at EUH

EPD dispatched to handle a vehicle accident at the Emory University Hospital Physician’s Parking Deck on Lowergate Drive on Sept. 9. While handling the accident, EPD checked the status of the driver’s license and discovered that there was a warrant for her arrest from the Atlanta Police Department (APD) for larceny.

The driver went to EUH so the hospital could check her for an injury related to the accident. EPD asked the hospital to let them know when they discharged her so they could meet with the suspect. EPD met with the suspect on the street near the parking deck and arrested her.

EPD then confirmed with APD that the warrant was still active and transported her to the DeKalb County Jail.

Simple battery at EUH

EPD responded to a fight in progress at the EUH valet parking service on Clifton Road at about 10 a.m. on Sept. 10.

The victim, a woman who works for the valet parking service, told EPD that a gray Honda pulled up to the valet area for valet service. She opened the passenger-side door to help the passenger, described as an elderly Black man around 70 to 80 years old, out of the car. The subject then proceeded to act upset and kick the door open, which slammed into the woman and hurt her forearm.

The subject then got out of the car and walked into the hospital. The victim did not know the man’s name but recognized him as someone who frequently visited the hospital and used the valet service.

The woman was not physically injured and currently does not wish to pursue any charges.
