Active shooter causes ‘police emergency’ at Emory Point

Emory University sent a message via email and text at 5:02 p.m. to community members that there was an active shooter at Emory Point. The message instructed people to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” and avoid the area. Later on, 11Alive confirmed that shots were fired on the scene. 

Fox 5 reported a large police presence on Clifton Road, with their crew claimed to have heard “gunshots” coming from near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) campus and Emory Point. At 5:33 p.m., the University sent the same notification stating “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT.”  

X user HamiltonBrBr shared a video of gunshots heard near Emory Point. 

At 5:33 p.m., a first responder vehicle pulled onto Clifton Road and law enforcement began helping people evacuate the CVS pharmacy on the corner, according to Fox 5 live coverage. 

According to Fox 5, a DeKalb County officer was shot outside of Emory Point. First responders took the officer to Emory University Hospital. The extent of the officer’s injuries is unknown. 

At 6:11 p.m., Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued a statement on X condemning the shooting.

“Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians. Each time, brave first responders rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are,” Kemp wrote. 

At 5:55 p.m., 11Alive reported that police had hit one active subject and had set up a barrier near the CDC. 

The University sent the same emergency notification as the two previous ones, with the addition of “Police on scene” at 5:58 p.m. 

At 6:01 p.m., 11Alive reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was on the scene.

Emory’s campus was the site of another shooting in September 2024 when two coworkers had an altercation in a restaurant at Emory Point. 

At 6:34 p.m., Emory University lifted the shelter-in-place order for the campus community and the surrounding area.
