University closes campuses over weekend due to ‘potentially hazardous weather’

As Georgians prepare for intense winter weather over the weekend, Emory University announced that all its campuses, including Oxford College, will be closed for “potentially hazardous weather conditions” on Jan. 24 and 25. The announcement comes after Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency across Georgia on Jan. 22 for the next 7 days, including DeKalb County, where Emory is located.

In an email sent to community members, the University said the decision was based on forecasts from the National Weather Service. All activities scheduled for Saturday and Sunday will no longer take place on campus, including classes and sporting events.

University employees are expected to work remotely, while essential personnel should contact their supervisors for guidance, according to the statement. The statement also guides Emory Healthcare (EHC) employees to check EHC communications for additional information about operations. The University will continue to provide additional updates and information through the Emory Safe app.

Last year, the University implemented remote operations for three days, from Jan. 21 to Jan. 23, 2025, after cold temperatures and snowfall created dangerous driving and outdoor conditions.
