You walk into a Pilates studio excited and ready to move, but something feels off—your clothes aren’t right, the equipment is confusing, and you’re unsure what to expect. That initial discomfort can quickly turn into frustration if you’re not prepared or fall into common mistakes.

To truly enjoy the benefits of pilates studios, it helps to know what not to do. This blog will explore five common mistakes to avoid so you can make the most of every session, stay motivated, and feel confident each time you step onto the reformer.

1. Skipping Studio Research

Many people skip this step and end up choosing a place that doesn’t match their needs. Each studio has its own vibe, class types, and teaching styles. Some may focus on reformer Pilates, while others may offer mat-based or mixed classes.

Visit the studio’s website, check reviews, and maybe call or visit in person. See if the instructors are certified and friendly. Look at class schedules and prices to be sure they work for you. If you skip this research, you might end up in a studio that feels uncomfortable or unhelpful.

2. Ignoring Studio Etiquette

Pilates studios often follow simple rules to keep classes peaceful and organized. Neglecting these can make your experience, as well as the experiences of others, less enjoyable.

A common mistake is talking loudly or using your phone in class. These actions can break the calm mood and distract others. Always arrive on time, and after class, make sure to clean up your mat and any equipment you used.

Respect the instructor by listening and not interrupting. Take care not to step on the mats or personal space of other people. If you're unsure of the rules, ask the staff or check posted signs.

3. Wearing the Wrong Attire

When you are in poses, it is possible that loose or bulky clothing will get in the way or move around too much. Clothes that are too tight may make it hard to stretch and breathe properly.

Choose soft, fitted clothing that lets you move freely. Avoid zippers, buttons, or jewelry that could dig into your skin or damage the equipment. Also, wear grippy socks if the studio requires them—they help keep your feet from sliding.

4. Neglecting Pre-Class Preparation

It’s easy to walk into class without warming up or knowing what to expect, but this can make the session harder. Arrive a few minutes early to stretch and calm your mind. Bring water, a towel, and any items your instructor suggests.

Avoid heavy meals before class so your body feels light and ready to move. If it’s your first class, let the teacher know—it helps them guide you better. Ahead of time, you should read the description of the class to ensure that it is appropriate for your level.

5. Not Listening to Your Body

You might feel tempted to keep up with others or push through pain—but this can lead to injury. Pilates is not about doing more; it’s about doing it right. If something feels too hard or uncomfortable, it’s okay to pause or ask for a simpler version. Stay aware of your breathing, posture, and energy during class.
