Divers Impress in First Individual Meet of Year
Both the men and women’s diving teams impressed in their first individual meet of the season Saturday, performing well in the First Annual Swimming and Diving Meet at the University of the South in Sewanee (Tenn.). No team score was recorded for Emory because only the divers represented Emory in the invitational. For the women, junior Sarah Greene placed first out of seven in the one-meter with a 452.55 and second out of three in the three-meter with a 415.85, both NCAA-qualifying scores. Volleyball’s Bowman Has New Position, Same Talent
At this time last year, Kate Bowman was a seldom-used freshman middle hitter. Now a sophomore, Bowman changed positions to outside hitter and is a shining light in Emory’s powerhouse volleyball program. “Kate is one of the best athletes on our team,” Head Coach Jenny McDowell said. “We knew we needed her on the court. Given the fact that we had two seniors in the middle position, we thought it was best to move Kate.” Bowman’s interest in volleyball began to develop at the age of 12. She gravitated towards the sport due to the immense enjoyment she found in…
Volleyball Team Goes Undefeated in Home Tournament
After seeing their hopes of a perfect season burnt by the Flames of Lee University last Monday in a tight five-game thriller, the fourth-ranked ranked volleyball team looked to bounce back in their home opener this weekend. The squad’s record now stands at 8-1 on the year. Head Coach Jenny McDowell was very happy with her team’s resolve and overall effort, particularly in her team’s challenging Friday night. “[I…
Volleyball Tough Five Set Loss Against D-II Foe
The fourth-ranked volleyball team proved unable to sustain the dominance of last weekend’s immaculate 4-0 performance in the Maryville College Invitational this past Monday evening, losing to the Flames of Lee University of Cleveland, Tenn. in a 5-game thriller. The Eagle’s record now stands at 4-1. Head Coach Jenny McDowell, however, believes that her squad took positives from the loss. “We learned that we can compete at the highest level,” McDowell said. “We have all the pieces we need to have an outstanding team, for sure. We just have to keep staying patient. We have a new team; we have…

This past weekend, the fourth-ranked women’s volleyball team went a perfect 4-0 in the Maryville College Invitational, defeating the Rhodes College Lynx (Tenn.), the Washington and Lee Generals (Va.), the Centre College Colonels (Ky.) and the Hanover College Panthers (In.). “I do think we are one of the top programs in the country, but we will have to improve every day if we are to reach the lofty goals we have set for ourselves,” Head Coach Jenny McDowell wrote in an email to the Wheel. “I am 100 percent confident [our] players are up for the challenge.” The women were more…
Eagles Set for Historic Fall Seasons
Emory once again excelled athletically last year, placing sixth in the 2011-2012 Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings. The Directors’ Cup is awarded to universities based on their sports teams’ overall performances. “It’s validation of a great deal of time and effort, and it’s a barometer for broad-based athletics success,” Emory Athletic Director Tim Downes said. “The idea that we will compete for national championships with some of the best students in the country confirms the value of the intrinsic role that athletics plays in higher education. It allows Emory to set a standard for what intercollegiate athletics should…
