Dadpunk Releases Summer Catalog
I hope you all remember Christopher Rhett Henry, the man who brought you the wonders of Dadpunk. If you were unable to read my previous article about the beginnings of Dadpunk, I suggest you don’t finish reading this article before doing so because we’re about to dive (~wavvy~) into the intricacies that have sustained and solidified Dadpunk’s Summer Catalog. For those of you who have read the other article, you’ll remember that he goes by Rhett, so let’s call him that. Rhett informed me that it is hot outside, or it’s hotter than it was before. It turns out that…
On Living: We’re All Sad Here
There’s something contemplative about bus rides and staring out the window, trying to catch a glimpse of all that passes you by. It’s kind of like life in the abstract; sometimes you feel like you’re just a bystander, watching everything go by quicker than you wanted or expected. You just want to beg and plead for life to take a break, to stop rapidly changing. During my contemplation on the bus, I too wanted to cry out to the bus driver, I wanted to ask him to slow down so I can get a better look at the blooming spring…
Stripes and Skateboards
Wow! Have you seen these guys? I’m sure you have. They are too hip to walk (or shred) by unnoticed. If you haven’t spotted them, here’s some help: they’re usually bombing some hills with their longboards, getting into trouble with pedestrians and/or listening to really cool witch-house music like oOOoO or Purity Ring. I guess it would make sense if you haven’t noticed them — they really only come out at night. They are like a different species filled with mystery and misery. Their deep interests in music and cinema add a fourth dimension to their realities, a kind of…
Iranian Proliferation: Much Ado About Nothing
The United States should approach Iranian proliferation through a lens of pragmatism and utilitarianism. Pragmatic action towards Iran means the United States has to change its perception of the Iranian Government. That means that rather than looking at Iran as a terrorist government, in order to create a peaceful international order, viewing Iran as a rational actor can and will facilitate the process of peace. In order to do this, the United States needs to realize three things: Iranian proliferation now is slow, inevitable and stabilizing. In the history of nuclear weapons, the only country to ever utilize one is…
Thanks to Dad-Punk, the Jean Jacket Is Back
With new generations come hilarious fashion trends. By hilarious, I mean notable, and by notable, I mean definitely something to talk about. We’ve all heard them: #seapunk, #cyberpunk, #sokawaii, etc., but no one has heard of the anachronistic yet remarkably chic #dadpunk. Dad-punk is a new kind of style that integrates themes that, well, dads wear while simultaneously representing the “metal” nature of being young. It took me some time, but I finally found an Emory student who was able to successfully pull off the so-called dad-punk. This is Christopher Rhett Henry, but he prefers Rhett. Rhett is a College…
What is a Virtuous Life?
I’ve always been a sucker for the Stoics. I envy their ability to encounter disaster without showing any kind of emotional distress. The Stoics emphasize the maintenance of one’s will in accordance with nature, and disregard external goods such as wealth, fame, beauty, etc. They feel as if these are not sufficient goods — which find happiness in themselves — but rather they are means to an end, which we find through desire (the end being a life full of good virtues). I wholeheartedly agree with Stoicism in that we don’t need external goods to be happy, and that we…
Our Deliberately Transcendental Youth
Imagine a place filled with all that is naturally beautiful. This place flourishes because of the bright flowers, deep green trees and wild birds that surround it. It is a place where inner peace and serenity are actually attainable, not just abstract, utopian concepts. This place is called the Memphis Botanical Gardens. I never really thought I would enjoy a trip that consisted of volunteering with a lot of people I didn’t really know. Things like that were awkward and hard for me. But for some reason, I decided to attend this trip, mainly because I wanted to leave a…
Free Pussy Riot Now!
Pussy Riot, a feminist punk-rock band made up of twelve anonymous members based in Moscow, Russia, has gotten a lot of world-wide recognition due to their “unorthodox” lyrics and “outspoken” political protests that speak against Russian president Vladimir Putin and general governmental policies that are deemed as patriarchal. Here is just a sample (translated from Russian) of the lyrics that they sing: “The head of the KGB, their chief saint, Leads protesters to prison under escort, In order not to offend His Holiness, Women must give birth and love Shit, shit, the Lord’s shit! Shit, shit, the Lord’s shit!”…
International Style
Emory University represents over 3,000 students and scholars from 120 different countries. This impressive statistic depicts the diverse nature of our college. It’s interesting to notice the different languages, religions and cultural norms, and I think the infiltration of international fashion trends often goes unnoticed and are somewhat taken for granted. Different cultures bring in different kinds of fashion trends that are fascinating to see and we are fortunate enough to experience these various trends throughout our campus. This is Shifra Samuel, an economics major and junior in the College. Shifra is coincidently from the same place my parents were…
Bathrooms Cause Gender Confusion
Have you ever thought about why Cox’s girl’s bathroom is pink? It’s not really something to think about unless you’ve taken the time to contemplate the gendered implications of separating “females” and “males” in public restrooms. I’ve always had countless issues with societal constructs, especially when discussing gender and sexuality. That being said, I do, more than not, unconsciously engage in them. Maybe by wearing make-up, high-heels, and dresses society has taught me what being a “female” is. And maybe by making people believe the norm is watching football and drinking beer with your bros, society has done the same for…
