The baseball team split its two games this week, as it fell to Washington & Lee University (Va.) 6-4 on Tuesday but bounced back on Wednesday with an 18-8 win over Oglethorpe University. The Eagles now sit at 2-2 on the season. “We didn’t play our best game [on Tuesday] but we were never down and we fought,” Head Coach Mike Twardoski said. “And the great part about that was that I knew we were going to play well against Oglethorpe.” In Tuesday’s 6-4 loss, the Eagles fell behind early in the game and were unable to complete a ninth-inning…

Eagles Make an Impact Off the Field
Last spring, a mother of one of the women’s basketball players was suffering from a form of leukemia and needed a donor match to help fight the disease. In response, the women’s basketball team organized a bone marrow drive in conjunction with Delete Blood Cancer DKMS, the world’s largest bone marrow donor center. “One of the defining characteristics of our student-athletes, and in fact of Emory students, is that they don’t just sit on the sidelines. When they see a need, they address it, and this is how positive change happens and this should be what playing sports teaches us,”…

The men’s and women’s track and field teams returned to action with two races this weekend after taking a six-week hiatus due to winter break. In order for the teams to stay in shape during the break, the coaches gave them exercises. The teams also returned to campus a week before the semester to have a few team practices before opening their season. The teams first competed in the Niswonger Invitational on Friday and then a small group traveled to North Carolina for the Winston-Salem State Open. “I think it was an excellent start…and overall I was very pleased,” Head…
Former Eagle Playing Pro Ball
Last January, right-handed pitcher Paul Schwendel (‘12C) had a lot on his mind as he was preparing for his final semester with the Emory baseball team. Like most college seniors, Schwendel had an idea of what he wanted to do after graduation. However, unlike most of his classmates, Schwendel’s post-graduation plan was to play professional baseball. When the Texas Rangers selected him in the final round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft, Schwendel did not hesitate to sign with the team. “That’s what I have always wanted to do, and I didn’t have another year of eligibility,” Schwendel said….

Women’s Basketball Squad Returns From Adventures in Italy
The women’s basketball team began preparing for its 2012 season a little differently than it has in the past. This year, the Eagles spent 10 days traveling through Italy, kickstarting practices with an additional bit of culture and giving them a chance to focus on history, food and, of course, basketball. “It was very different and very exciting,” sophomore forward Gabi Whitmer said. “We got a cultural experience from it, and we also learned a lot about ourselves basketball-wise, so it was really good coming from both aspects.” In October 2011 sophomore guard Hannah Lilly, along with two of her…
