After hearing Sodexo food service workers’ complaints about disrespect from the management and other general mistreatment, many Emory students took an active interest in the issue as an ethical one — and many were so concerned they joined dissatisfied workers to rally last Wednesday.
While we cannot verify every single one of the workers’ complaints, which range from lack of breaks to general disrespect from the management, it is encouraging that Emory students are exerting themselves on behalf of the University’s service employees. The issue is not one that directly concerns students in an obvious way; yet as Emory prides itself as being an ethically-engaged institution, members of the community have a responsibility to stand up for the welfare of those around them. Several students expressed this sentiment during the rally on Wednesday, saying that they joined the movement because they felt that they had to do their part to ensure workers’ voices were heard and that certain standards were being upheld at Emory.
While we commend Emory students for their awareness, it is just as important that they build on their initial feelings on the matter and do their best to become properly informed on the issue. Undoubtedly, many students are not aware of the particulars of the Sodexo workers complaints; it is imperative that, before joining accusations, they become as educated on the specifics as possible.
As far as Sodexo is concerned, regardless of the legitimacy of workers’ precise complaints, the company still has a basic obligation to its workers and would be wise to provide them with proper care and concern. The Sodexo employees are valued members of the Emory community and interact with students, faculties and visitors on a more than daily basis. Students have a right to be upset if they perceive that they are not being treated as they should, whereas Sodexo has no excuse to treat these individuals with anything but respect and understanding.
