Standup comedian Aziz Ansari poked fun at the typical Emory student last night at the Glenn Memorial Auditorium.

The Student Programming Council (SPC) booked Ansari as part of Homecoming Week. Ansari has appeared in “Scrubs,” “Human Giant,” “Parks & Recreation,” and the recent movie “Funny People.”

After an opening act by standup comedian Dan Levy, Ansari joked with the audience about how long-distance relationships never work and later humored the crowd with topics ranging from gay rights to how his cousin Harris enjoys scarfing down cinnamon buns.

“A fat Indian kid: it’s like seeing a shooting star only it’s fat, brown and on the ground,” Ansari said.

Throughout the performance there was much laughter and audience interaction. Ansari made many quips aimed toward the average college student, including lamenting over a bed sheet with a thread count that was falsely advertised and several LearnLink cracks.

“Ever since I started using LearnLink I don’t have friends anymore,” Ansari mocked after he called a student onstage to explain the network to him.
Ansari then expounded on the topic of technology and spoke about a common texting mishap.

He said he sent a text to a friend that read, “Kim is so hot.” Ansari said that he had accidently sent the text message to Kim and after panicking for a few moments, said that he decided the best course of action was to send more messages along the lines of, “But she has a great personality.”

Near the end of the event, Ansari asked the audience what topics they wanted to discuss and students called out topics that ranged from Australia to Obama.

He began focusing on Kanye West and said West’s encounter with Taylor Swift was “so crazily rude and hilarious.”

After hearing that beer and Chick-fil-A chicken nuggets would be served at the Sean Kingston concert, Ansari expressed how much he loved Chick-fil-A.

“I even went to the other end of the airport to get my hands on the stuff,” Ansari declared.

SPC President Matt Bodien said that SPC wasn’t sure how popular the comedian event would be.

“Sean Kingston was literally right after, so we knew numbers might be down a little, but people really showed up so we were happy about that,” Bodien said.

According to Bodien, Ansari is a fairly new comedian but has a lot of exposure with his new movie. Because of this, SPC thought he would appeal to a broad audience.

“It’s just great seeing another funny brown person as a comedian,” College junior Tirth Patel said.

College senior Robin Higgins said that she thought Ansari was funny, and that he was a very college-age suited comedian.

Ansari said that he enjoyed performing for Emory.

“The show was super fun,” Ansari exclaimed in an interview with the Wheel.

“Everyone was so energetic.”
