Pike Fraternity to Return to Campus

Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity will be re-established at Emory this month after having been removed from the University five years ago due to multiple disciplinary violations.

When the fraternity’s Beta Kappa chapter was removed in 2004 due to conduct violations, both the University and IFC agreed to allow it full recognition once all of the fraternity’s sanctions had been fulfilled, according to Victor Felts, director of the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life.

Last year, representatives from the national organization of the fraternity — which is known as Pike — made a presentation to IFC outlining their plan for a successful return to campus. As part of the re-colonization process, IFC requested several documents and promises from the fraternity. Once received, IFC members voted unanimously for Pike’s return.

After gaining approval from IFC and the University and soliciting the support of its Atlanta-area alumni, expansion consultants took on the next steps in the process.

The two professional consultants from Pike’s international headquarters, Duncan Robinson and Mike Cashman, are currently on campus meeting with faculty and students to gain a better understanding of the campus climate and Greek life at Emory, providing information to interested individuals and offering bids to join.

Once established, the members would be held to the same standards and be accountable for the same policies as other Greek organizations at Emory.

“We are starting with a blank canvas. If there are students on campus that were a part of the chapter when we revoked the charter [they] were automatically placed on alumni status and thus cannot become members of the colony,” Robinson wrote in an e-mail to the Wheel.

A team of advisors from the international headquarters is putting together and training an alumni advisory board that will work closely with undergraduates to educate members on the policies and procedures of the fraternity.

The consultants will also be training students to hold offices within the colony because the leadership structure of the colony will consist of an executive council, chairmanship positions and multiple committees. Every member will have an opportunity to get involved and impact how the organization will run, Robinson wrote.

“We have found a lot of interest on campus,” Robinson wrote. “The opportunity to become a member of one of North America’s largest and most respected fraternities, all while being a founding member of a new group here on campus seems to be appealing to a lot of men.”

Alpha Epsilon Pi is currently housed at Pike’s former house at 22 Eagle Row. Once Pike maintains a healthy number of members and receives its charter from international headquarters, it will be allowed to return to its former house, according to Felts. Robinson wrote that AEPi knows about Pike’s return and will move into a new facility when the lease is up.

Pike had a history of violations and five years ago, “the attitude of the members was such, that they were untouchable,” Felts wrote in an e-mail to the Wheel.

“[The Interfraternity Council] presented its evidence and documentation to the vice president for Campus Life, who agreed that the blatant disregard for University and IFC policies warranted removal,” Felts wrote.

Although Pike’s interfraternity relations were rocky at the time of removal, Robinson wrote that the Greek community has been very receptive to Pike’s return to Emory. He wrote that sororities have been especially helpful in recommending potential recruits.

“The new colony will obviously be different from the chapter that was suspended in terms of the men that comprise it, as well as the direction that the organization will go,” Robinson wrote, adding that Pike adheres to the ideals of S.L.A.G., which stands for Scholars, Leaders, Athletes and Gentlemen. “Mike and I are looking to bring in well-rounded men that are focused on school, involved on campus and in the community, and most importantly gentlemen that will represent Pi Kappa Alpha well.”
