Rock band Of A Revolution (O.A.R.) will perform at this year’s Fall Band Party scheduled for Nov. 7, the Student Programming Council (SPC) announced Sunday.
SPC President Zach Krame said the council chose O.A.R. because they thought it was a band that a lot of Emory students enjoy.
“People rave about their concerts. Some people on SPC said that O.A.R. concerts are some of the best they’ve ever been to,” he said.
SPC Vice President Julian Stern said O.A.R. is a big name that the Council knew Emory would get excited about.
“We were looking more for the rock genre because we did [rapper] Lupe [Fiasco] in the spring,” he said.
O.A.R. will perform at Emory for the band party as part of their Campus Consciousness Tour, an effort to entertain, educate, inspire and activate students on sustainability.
“The Campus Consciousness Tour was started by one of the members of the band Guster. They find different bands to travel around the country to college campuses and promote sustainability,” Krame said. “It’s kind of a festive atmosphere. They bring different booths.”
According to the tour’s website, the Campus Consciousness Tour is half-rock tour and half-environmental campaign. It is affiliated with the non-profit organization Reverb, which “educates and engages musicians and their fans to promote environmental sustainability.”
Since 2004, Reverb has helped artists and fans reduce or eliminate more than 42,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, used more than 300,000 gallons of biodiesel fuel for trucks and buses, and reached out to more than 7 million fans.
Krame said the theme of the tour seems relevant and fits with “the green spirit that Emory’s been kind of energized with in the past year.”
Krame and Stern both commented on the success of this weekend’s Homecoming ball featuring RJD2 and Who’s Bad, a Michael Jackson impersonation band.
“The Homecoming ball was the best I’ve ever seen at Emory,” Krame said. “I’ve never seen Asbury Circle fill up like that before. Students were dancing and loving the band, and there was definitely a lot of energy out there.”
Last year, Akon was slated to perform at the Fall Band Party but a canopy collapsed above the stage where Akon was to perform. Stern said that since SPC has had unfortunate incidents, like the Akon performance and the general discontent with Everclear in the 2007-08 school year, it was nice to see everything go just right for this Homecoming.
“We’re just so happy about how it turned out, and it kicks off the year right,” he said.
The opening band for the night is yet to be determined.
