Chemistry Center to Undergo Renovations
A $52 million expansion and renovation of the Stanford S. Atwood Chemistry Center will begin the day after commencement on May 14 and finish in early 2015. Largely funded by proceeds from the discovery of an antiviral HIV/AIDS drug in 1996, the project aims to foster a more collaborative and efficient atmosphere inside Atwood, according to David Lynn, the director of the Chemistry department. These modifications are all part of a long-term plan to designate Atwood-Emerson as a science commons since that area is surrounded by other science buildings, namely the Psychology and Interdisciplinary Sciences (PAIS) and Math and Science…

Social Media Impacts Relationships
Nowadays, it’s not just a simple knock on the head. A new study led by U. Oregon graduate student David Howell and his advisors Dr. Li-Shan Chou and Dr. Louis “Lou” Osternig indicates that certain individuals may take longer to recover from concussions than previously thought. The study differentiated symptoms (e.g. headache, memory loss) from their ability to react and multitask, finding that while subjects usually recovered from symptoms between two weeks to a month, the latter left them milliseconds slower, even at the two-month mark. “Even though somebody feels better and they may say, ‘Okay, I’m ready to play,…
Emory to Remove Chick-fil-A From Cox Hall
The University will officially remove Chick-fil-A from the Cox Hall Food Court this summer. Food Advisory Committee Emory (FACE) presented three proposed floor plans for Cox Hall at a student feedback meeting on March 7, none of which contained the Chick-fil-A currently present in the building. Chick-fil-A will be eliminated as a food option in Cox Hall as part of a facelift the food court will undergo during the summer, according to David Furhman, the senior director of Emory’s Food Service Administration. The adopted floor plan will place a pizza and pasta venue where Chick-fil-A currently resides. Other changes will include…
English Dept. Faculty Members Respond to Wagner’s Column
March 6, 2013 Open Letter to the Emory University Community: We, the undersigned faculty members of the English department, are writing to express our solidarity with those in our campus community—faculty, students, staff, and alumni—who have expressed outrage, dismay, and bewilderment at President Wagner’s recent Emory Magazine column “As American as . . . Compromise.” (Many of our junior and untenured colleagues, as well as staff members, wanted to sign this letter, but out of a shared sense of caution, we have restricted endorsement only to those who enjoy the privileges – and responsibilities – of tenure or senior faculty standing.) The intellectual and moral shortcomings…
Recent Changes to Suicide Prevention Program
Emory’s suicide prevention program, “Emory Cares 4 U,” will now be funded by the University and conducted within the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), formerly known as Student Counseling Services, after a three-year suicide prevention federal grant ended in August, Suicide Prevention Coordinator Mahlet Endale said. The initiatives under the grant — which provided $100,000 a year for three years from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration — will slow down. Also, the duties will now be spearheaded by Endale in CAPS rather than by the previous coalition of about 20 individuals housed in the satellite offices spread…

Insighter October 26
Sitting on the Quad on Tuesday, I’m the only one. No one crosses it, no one uses it. Maybe it’s because it’s still wet, but that doesn’t bother me. I have an old Emory sweatshirt that I throw into the grass, and I plop myself in the middle of the sunny expanse far away from the shade of that one tree I call mine because the rooted nook at its base holds my back with strength and sturdiness. I pull out my Chipotle lunch bag, and I remember I’ve forgotten my fork. I push the bag aside, arranging my now…
Electoral System Alienates Voters
The problem with “one man, one vote” as we call it in the United States is that it is not true. This is the case for a multitude of reasons, and is exemplified in our collective demeanor with respect to the presidential election. Namely, it is exemplified by our Electoral College system, and how it is not something that should still exist in our democracy as it stands today. Anyone who wants to defend the Electoral College system points out that it has only resulted in a president who did not win the popular vote in three cases: 1876, 1888,…
Trendy Tuesdays
Floral patterns for spring may not seem original, but this year designers have revitalized the trend in a big, bold and romantic way in their new collections. From all-over motifs to floral textures, models were cascading down the runways in pretty petals. While Peter Som, Suno and Rebecca Minkoff used light, pastel hues to accentuate the romantic aspects of the prints, many designers showcased this trend in an array of colors and styles. Models wore it all: gauzy, billowy tops, suit separates and tight cocktail dresses, clearly showing the pattern’s versatility. Atlanta’s weather is perfect for this trend, so why wait till…
