Petition Supports Wagner Amid Opposition
College faculty will finish voting tomorrow on whether or not they have confidence in University President James W. Wagner. And in the midst of awaiting the result, students have begun publicly expressing their views. A “Keep Wagner” online petition created yesterday received almost 700 signatures by press time Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the Student Re-Visioning Committee (SRC) gathered on the Quadrangle Wednesday to urge faculty to vote “no confidence.” The SRC is a group of students that formed in opposition to the department changes announced last semester and that has protested since the fall. Supporting Wagner The petition, available at KeepWagner.com,…
Liu, Olsen Earn ‘Ultimate’ Honor
Emory sophomore Christian Olsen wasn’t quite sure what to expect when he submitted his application for the Ultimate Frisbee Under-23 national team. “I wasn’t even sure if I would make it to tryouts,” he said. He did much more than that. Olsen, as well as his fellow teammate and coach Byron Liu, will be representing the Eagles’ ultimate squad on the U-23 national team this summer — one of three teams the U.S. is sending to represent the country in international play. It was a grueling process, with an application that included several essays, an ultimate-style resume and a recommendation…
House Makes Library Into a Home
Walking into the library, the sheer size, not to mention the hours of work ahead, could make any student feel overwhelmed. On a recent night, a student pulled open the heavy doors, looked up with a tired grin and reached down into his jeans pocket to grab his EmoryCard — ready to swipe it at the entrance turnstiles of the library. But then he noticed the all-too-familiar man in the black swivel chair behind the large gray desk. The student reached out his hand in the air and gestured to the man with the sliver of a gold name tag…
Getting More Than A Degree
Lately, I’ve been having a mid-life crisis. Growing up, I was always told one thing: just make it past this. Sacrifice a little longer, and it will all be worth it. In high school, it was studying a little longer, taking on more activities, giving up time with friends. But it was worth it because these actions would lead to acceptance into a good school, right? Then I got into a good school. Emory University offered me many opportunities to take the next step and pursue my dreams upon graduation. But this wasn’t the end either; this time, it was…
PosterFuse, Brotips Launch Collaboration
Emory students also share a love for wasting time on amusing social media websites. Consequently, when College junior Dominique “Sketch” Barfield began posting witty responses to the peculiar actions of his peers onto the internet, they quickly gained popularity. Brotips, which Barfield created in March 2011, has since attracted over 500,000 Facebook likes, over 300,000 Tumblr fans, and over 700,000 Twitter followers. Started on the multimedia blogging website Tumblr, Brotips offers daily pieces of advice condensed into a short, quirky quip, such as #305: “If you can’t win an argument, correct their grammar instead,” or #413: “Never make eye contact…
Kendrick Lamar Draws Record Crowds, Divisive Audience Reactions
Rapper Kendrick Lamar performed for a crowd of approximately 7,000 students and guests on McDonough Field at this year’s Spring Band Party on Friday evening. Event planners from Student Programming Council (SPC) estimate that attendance numbers were the highest in Emory concert history. The concert was the first in a series of two weekend performances that marked the end of Dooley’s Week, a week-long celebration of Emory’s unofficial mascot. 3Lau, an electronic DJ from St. Louis, performed at Dooley’s Ball on Saturday night. Lamar took the stage around 9:30 p.m., following a brief set from Five & A Dime, a…
Looking For New Rhetoric Around Immigration Reform
The bulk of media coverage on current initiatives for U.S. immigration reform has centered on either the fate of 11 million undocumented immigrants already living here or our reception of low-skilled migrant workers. An issue in immigration reform, however, is a more fundamental question of America’s orientation to the world-at-large: is it our ambition to be a continual nation of immigrants? According to a 2010 census about 13 percent of the U.S. population are foreign born. We need policies and a popular rhetoric affirming the sustained presence of persons from diverse countries within our borders. Even if not often spoken…
March Madness: Should Emory Be Dancing?
Another iteration of March Madness is in the books. Kudos to last night’s newly anointed champions, and kudos to the rest of the basketball powerhouses and their fat T.V. contracts. The players, with their free education, benefit too, of course. And there are also the underdogs, the yearly cinderellas everyone falls head over heels for. Nine-seed Wichita State was in town for the Final Four. Bonus points if you can tell me which state they are in. Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) dunked their way to the Sweet 16 and onto the national stage. Harvard, for once not the top…
Cherry Orchard Blends Drama and Comedy
Theater Emory’s current production of The Cherry Orchard presents an aesthetically-striking and emotionally-volatile vision for Russian dramatist and author Anton Chekhov’s final play. The first thing that strikes viewers upon entering the Mary Gray Monroe Theater (MGMT) is the careful innovation with which the physical space itself has been treated; the audience is seated so that they are not wholly separate from the play’s action but simply on its periphery. The set blends aristocratic interiors with expanses of turf littered with ruins, giving concrete presence to the psychological and social state of many of the play’s characters. Each character contains…
Run-Off Results For SGA, CC Announced
College junior Ye Ji Kim, College junior Jerry Lau and College sophomore Adam Chan were elected to the positions of Student Government Association (SGA) vice president, College Council (CC) president and CC vice president, respectively, in the run-off elections that were held Tuesday. In the student government general elections last Thursday, no candidate in these three categories received a majority of the student vote. A run-off was scheduled after the candidate or candidates with the lowest number of votes were dropped from the ballot. Kim, who has served as CC divisional treasurer in the past year, defeated Goizueta Business School…
