Indie rock bands We Are Scientists and The Antlers will perform at WMRE’s 8th annual Spring Band Party this Thursday.

According to College senior and senior general manager Geoff Schorkopf and College junior and current general manager Matt Wiegel, these bands are two of the most prominent artists WMRE has brought to campus. Past artists have included Matt & Kim and The Fiery Furnaces.

“We try to bring up-and-coming artists that people maybe haven’t heard of before, but that people will appreciate,” said Wiegel in an interview with the Wheel.

Although Schorkopf explained members of WMRE may have a specific taste in music that does not always reflect that of the student body as a whole, this concert is meant to cater to the entire Emory community.

“The bands are more geared toward the college radio fan,” said Schorkopf. “Of all of our events, it’s the least WMRE-focused. It’s not just for the DJs.”

With the launch of a new AM frequency, 1660, WMRE has had a successful year — and the Spring Band Party is a great way to end the semester, Wiegel added.

“It’s a capstone event for WMRE. It’s our finale of a really good year,” said Wiegel. “And we want to finish it with an awesome show that a lot of people will really enjoy.”

The decision to bring The Antlers was an easy one for WMRE, Schorkopf and Wiegel noted.

“We pursued them from the get-go,” said Schorkopf. “And they were one of my favorite choices.”

We Are Scientists was chosen afterwards.

“We were looking for someone to pair with The Antlers, and they were suggested by one of the agents we were in contact with,” said Wiegel. “It just kind of came together.”

Wiegel and Schorkopf agreed that the acquisition of noteworthy performers for this year’s Spring Band Party is a great step in the right direction for Emory’s student-run radio station.

“Everything we’ve done this year is bigger than what we’ve done in the past. We’re trying to expand WMRE’s name on campus,” said Schorkopf. “We’re trying to move toward legitimate radio, and this is a way to further that movement.”
